At 8 months pregnant myself, it is inspiring, affirming and reassuring to read this piece. Thank you Stephanie!
I have been a "do-er" and over-achiever my entire adult life and it wasn't until I entered my third trimester that I finally, gracefully, powerfully gave myself permission to slooowww dowwwn. To savor and cherish this precious time. To get out of the "doing" and into the "being" of it. While I can "say" that I've recognized the inordinate pressure I have long put on myself to engage and succeed, it is a difficult thing to really let loose my white-knuckled grip on. It seems that it is part of a bigger conversation that is ubiquitous for women in this day and age - where prime baby-making years compete with prime career years. For much of my pregnancy, I have been looking to the world, to colleagues, to friends, to my beloved to assure me that what I am doing now, growing a human being, is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing I could possibly be doing. What I realize is that I need to believe that and know it to the marrow of my bones, regardless of how the world views it. I am finding that permission and self-reference to be an extraordinarily powerful place to move from. And perhaps that the world responds when we move from a place of truth such as this.
For now, going to a yoga class, taking a good long walk, eating nourishing food and taking it easy are PLENTY to fill my days with achievement. Hallelujah.
