There is no arguing that it is tough to get your workouts in when you become a mom. New moms are happy to get in a shower much less a workout. But it’s at this exhausted time that you need fitness most. Your family needs YOU feeling healthy and energized. You may not be able to get to your favorite spin class or to the gym, but you can fit in fitness.
First off, stop thinking that you have to workout in a gym and that it has to be an hour. If you can consistently get 20-30 minutes in to your day, you will feel so much better! But how you ask?
- Get on the floor. When your baby has tummy time, so should you. Do some mountain climbers, planks and crunches. I bet your baby will giggle when she sees you doing jumping jacks.
- Pack it on. Your baby ,not the weight. Many moms have a front pack carrier. If you can maintain good posture, this is a great way to get in a workout. Carefully, do some lunges, squats and a wall sit. Take a walk with your baby in the carrier. The extra weight will increase your work load and your calorie expenditure.
- Stroll it out. Your stroller walk with your baby may be one of the best parts of your day. Your baby is happy out in the fresh air and you can get in a little workout. Increase your speed or look for some hills to increase your intensity. Do some stroller lunges or squats to add some strength to your routine.
- Mommy and Me – There are so many great mommy and me classes out there. From Stroller Strides to mommy and me yoga. It’s a great way for you to meet other new moms and have fun with your baby!
Truly, one of the best gifts you can give your family is to be active throughout the day. This time in your baby’s life is is precious. Don’t feel you have to miss a minute while you go to the gym. You have the rest of your life for that. When you bring your baby in to your workout, they see that mom likes to exercise and will hopefully emulate you for the rest of his/her life!
