Growing up in Florida, it felt like we lived in summertime all year round. I even have holiday photos wearing shorts and riding bikes outside. So, now that I live with my family in Maryland, after a long winter of daydreaming about sunshine, I’m determined to make the most of our summer. However, with a toddler running around and a baby on the way, I need to make sure we all enjoy the weather safely. Summer safety is of the utmost importance in this mama’s book, so here are four tips to make sure both you and your family are smiling all season long: 1. Prepare for the heat. I love summer weather, but the summer weather doesn’t always love me. To ensure that we all enjoy the great outdoors, I make sure we have plenty of water on hand. As an expecting mother, I am constantly worrying about my son getting enough to drink, but it’s easy to get overheated or dehydrated when pregnant too, so pack plenty of drinks for everyone. Before we leave the house I first put sunscreen on myself before applying it to my son’s skin. That way I don’t forget or miss any spots. I also tend to keep a few hats, towels and extra sunscreen for reapplying in the car, so we don’t get to a park and realize they were left at home. 2. Take frequent breaks. Whether it’s swimming in the pool, blowing bubbles or riding bikes outside, it’s easy to get caught up in activities and lose track of time. I try and make sure we take a break every 20 minutes for at least 5 minutes. Sitting under the shade of a tree and sipping water helps make sure no one is getting overheated and it’s a great way to segway to the next fun game. When my son really doesn’t want to stop what he’s doing, an everyday challenge with a toddler, I tend to have a fun snack ready to go as a distraction. Watermelon is a great snack for staying hydrated in summer. 3. Think outside the box. In the height of summe,r things can just be too hot hot hot! Instead of a beach trip why not take the family camping in the mountains? Or plan activities like dollar movie days, bowling with friends or making indoor forts to beat the worst of the heat. 4. Seize the day! Every Florida girl knows that the morning and evenings can be the best weather for enjoying the outdoors. When your little one wakes up early, why not grab the sprinkler and play outside before the heat settles in. After dinner, take a long walk and enjoy the twilight breeze. This lets little ones get the wiggles out and provides fresh air for everyone, without the blazing sun beating down. Hopefully with these summer safety tips, we can all enjoy a safe summer season filled with laughter and fun! Megan Yarmuth is the mama of a two year old little boy and another on the way.
