Who doesn’t have the occasional sore back or achy feet with pregnancy? Here’s a great little kit you can make yourself to help soothe yourself when your maternity massage therapist is on vacation. It’s a great money-saving quick fix, too. It’s especially fun to use when your significant other can help!
What You Need
–Essential Oils: I like to use a blend called Valor from Young Living, due to its high quality. But, you can make your own blend with the following: 15 drops blue spruce, 7 drops frankincense, 6 drops blue tansy, 2 drops balsam fir. (Be sure to place this in a glass container, as it will melt plastic). This blend is known as the one every pregnant woman would want to be stuck on an island with, and is called the “Chiropractor in a bottle!”
–Coconut Oil: I find my unprocessed organic coconut oil at Aldi for a great price. You can also find it affordably at WalMart.
-“Thumbby”: This is a silicone massage tool that was originally designed to save therapists’ thumbs. You can find yours here.
-Rice pack: I got mine from a local artist shop, but you can find them all over Etsy.
-Essential oil diffuser: Make sure it’s a cool mist diffuser. You can find good quality items on Amazon. Here’s an example.
How to Use the Kit
Prevention is the easiest way to ward off aches and pains, so be sure to use your oil blend in the diffuser during the part of the day when you normally feel fatigued or sore.
Next, decide on hot or cold relief. If it’s a swollen-something, go for cold. If it’s tight muscles, think hot. To heat your rice pack, follow the package instructions. To cool it, place in the freezer for a couple of hours (it might be a good idea to just store it in the freezer in a Ziploc bag, so it’s ready to go when needed). I prefer to store mine with a few drops of the oil blend, so it smells fantastic and has added healing qualities. The Thumbby can be slightly heated, also. Place it in the sun, or in a bowl of very warm water for a few minutes. Do NOT microwave your Thumbby.
The rice pack is easy to use for aches. Just place it over the area in need of relief.
If it’s deep pressure you need, select the Thumbby. You can lay it flat on the floor and target the tight spot by lying over it, or you can stick it to the wall (it has an amazing suction ability on many surfaces). The wall option is easier in the later stages of pregnancy. If someone can help, have them push into the knotty area. Afterward, place a couple drops of your oil blend in a little coconut oil and rub onto the sore area.
If you need massage, you can rub a larger amount of coconut oil blend over the sore area and then use the Thumbby to work out the aches. Be sure to dilute the oil blend with coconut oil before placing it on your skin.
One Last Trick
If you visit the chiropractor (certified to work with pregnant women of course), have someone massage your diluted oil blend into your spine when you return home. Many people claim this helps their adjustment “stay” longer.
