CREATING HOPE FOR THE HOLIDAYS
BY DESIREE MILLER
Mosquito netting, a year’s education in Afghanistan, a pre-natal supply kit for a war zone…all items that could be on your holiday shopping list this year. What’s that? You don’t know anyone who wants those things for Christmas? Well, if you have someone to buy for who already has enough, you can buy these things and more for someone who really needs it and gift it in your friend’s name. And it won’t cost you much, either. The International Rescue Committee’s gift site can connect you with supplies people around the world really need, then send a card to your someone special letting them know what you purchased in their name. Gifts vary in price from $18, which can buy a mosquito net for a refugee family in Africa, to an essential prenatal care package for a new mother living in a war zone (it’s $24 and includes vital supplies for a safe home delivery, a blanket and clothing!), to one year’s education for an Afghan girl ($52).
The IRC can provide gifts that improve the lives of mothers and their families, both here in the United States, and in over forty countries around the world. Now that’s the kind of gift that creates a truly happy holiday.
