Mindful Eating, For Yourself and Your Family

To me, Mindful Eating starts with the food I purchase.  Perhaps it is because I am a Farmer’s Daughter’s daughter, but I just feel better about feeding myself and my family food that I have purchased straight from a farm.  OK, if we get technical all food comes from farms and gardens.  Yes.  But there are farms, and then there are huge corporate farms….there is a difference.  I like meeting the folks who work on the land and take the time and care to plant, care for, and harvest the food that I will create meals with.  It makes me feel like I’m paying respect and honoring the process, and that is a form of mindfulness.

Take another look at the bounty of the image on this post.  All of this was purchased by me for my family at a local Farmer’s Market last weekend.  This is locally sourced food.  How beautiful.  Isn’t it inspiring?  I joyfully created so many meals from this, soups from the onions, pumpkin, squash, and celery, salad from the peppers, seasoning with the Meyer’s lemons, and the tomatoes were simply delicious cut up drizzling a little olive oil and sprinkling salt on them.  My daughter went nuts and ate them all in 2 days!  The apples, well, they were crisp and handheld snack material.

When you enjoy the process of purchasing the food.  When you pay attention to the smells in the market and talk to the growers about what their selects for the day is.  When you carry your purchases to the car.  You connect.  You connect to the present moment of selecting healthy, delicious food to nourish yourself and your family.  And that connection continues later that day or week when you select and choose what to snack on or what to create a meal with.

Mindfulness is about paying attention to the moment and honoring the isness of it.  You certainly can do it with food.  And I believe that purchasing from a local Farmer’s Market, or Farm Stand is one easy and fun way to create that reality.
