We are officially in the throes of the official hunger games for families and children….the Holiday Season! I personally couldn’t believe how much I could stuff my belly this past Thanksgiving, and remembered the time when I was in the middle of my first Trimester, preggo, and it was TDay, I had traveled to my Aunt’s for the feast, where she had 10 pies, homemade, OMG! Oh yeah, how many do you think I sampled that year?
I had a strange beginning of my pregnancy, in that I had morning sickness all day long, especially when I was hungry. That is such an odd combo. I learned real fast of course that “morning sickness” is a term who’s name does not exactly describe the definition. I never vomited, thank goodness, however, the nausea would bring me to tears, and my husband to his knees.
I learned thru immediate trial and error, that when I was eating, and pretty much only while I was actually consuming food, my nausea would be relieved, for a short but wonderful period of time. This resulted in my seeking food, most of the time, and gaining 10 pounds during those first 12 weeks! My dear friend Anna had gifted me all of her clothes from her pregnancy (she was 7 months ahead of me in birthing India). Normally Anna is at least 15 lbs lighter than me, and almost 4 inches shorter, so I knew that the sizes would be on the small side. I wasn’t prepared to be wearing her 3rd trimester pants during my 8th week of pregnancy however!
If you are pregnant and needing to eat to calm the throes of nausea, by all means go for it. However, I must admit before you all, so that you possibly will make a different choice than I….what other natural remedies or western medicine cures might be out there for pregnancy nausea? I NEVER stopped to think about it…can you believe it? I was in such a survival mode of eat and sigh.… And both my parent’s and my hubby’s were deceased, so unless I sat and meditated on my ancestors….no tips were coming from them.
My OBGYN kept telling me it was fine, that with my height (5′ 8″) he expected a weight gain of 40lbs….I surpassed that to 60lbs… And I just kept eating and having an immediate feeling of cure, so I didn’t change a thing. Since then I have learned about homeopathic remedies, and ginger tea. I probably did use the magnet bracelets, come to think of it. And I sucked on a few of those pregnancy lollipops. Does anyone else have any other remedy ideas? What did you try that worked? What did you grandma tell you to do? Your midwife? Your doula? Your OBGYN? Your sister?
I don’t have a specific answer here, except to encourage your inquisitiveness. Google ideas, talk to other women, ask ask ask. And do this throughout your pregnancy about any question that you are looking for answers for. The quest to know more about how to be healthy and pregnant and how to be a parent, is important. We don’t innately have all the answers, getting used to reaching out and asking for help will only put you in a more advantaged position later as a parent. Trust me. The questions don’t stop after the birth!
I can tell you that gaining all of that weight made my pregnancy during the last trimester much more difficult and uncomfortable than it needed to be. My baby was bigger, although not huge. A bigger baby is a more difficult vaginal delivery. My stamina had really diminished, and my sleep had become a constant battle, so by my labor day, I was not really ready physically for the marathon. I ran it, and it was amazing, but I was exhausted for weeks post partum.
